Oral History Project
Voices from Stonegate

Stonegate looking towards Minster GatesHave you ever lived or worked in or around Stonegate in York?

One of the most unique ways in which you can get involved in Barley Hall is to record your own memories of your life or time working in this area of York. York Archaeological Trust is currently working on a new project with local oral historian, Van Wilson, to create a new publication and possibly an exhibition of memories of Stonegate and the surrounding area.

The area encompassed will be that bounded by Church Street, St Sampson’s Square, Davygate, Stonegate and Low Petergate. Coffee Yard, Swinegate, Finkle Street, Little Stonegate and Grape Lane will all be included.

Local historian Van Wilson will be carrying out interviews with people who have lived or worked in this area for a long period of time. The project will culminate in a book, the third in the Trust’s Oral History Series, and an exhibition.
