Romanesque Treasures
of York Walk

Romanesque art and architecture, which flourished
in England throughout the twelfth century, incorporated
elements from a variety of European traditions, including
imagery originating in the northern Europe of the
Vikings. Witness green men, strange beasts and scenes
of combat from over 800 years ago.
Please note: the walk involves crossing some very
busy roads. Some of the sites have
uneven floors. Sturdy footwear is a must.

and help construct our giant work of art, which recreates
a Viking settlement. Have a go at adding to our journey
banner display, created by communities around York.
See the traditional craft of willow weaving and create
your own masterpiece, or even get to work on a musical
instrument. Enjoy performances, talks and puppet shows
- drop in for the morning or for the afternoon. Refreshments

'Women West over the Sea' Tempest Anderson Hall, Yorkshire

In the Viking Age Scandinavian language, culture, religion
and genes were transplanted to the islands of Britain
and the North Atlantic. This lecture explains the part
women played in this process. The Festival is delighted
to welcome Professor Judith Jesch of the University
of Nottingham and the Viking Identities Network for
