The Great JORVIK Balloon Release

See a cloud of colourful balloons launched on their voyage into the unknown. The creators of the most famous animated Viking in the world, Noggin the Nog, will be on hand to help, along with the Lord Mayor of York. Look out for a special appearance by Thor Nogson, who will be sending the army of young Vikings on their journey across the city!

The JORVIK Viking Festival is very proud to present two giants of children's television, Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, who join the Festival in 2007 to introduce this very special screening of some of Noggin the Nog's finest moments. The partnership responsible for creating such
timeless classics as the Clangers, Ivor the Engine and Bagpuss will be bringing Noggin, Nogbad, Graculus and many other well-loved characters to life at York's City Screen. There will be stories told about their work - (it's not widely known that Peter Firmin made Olly Beak and Basil Brush!) - and the chance to ask them questions, or even just to say 'thank you' to these two visionary programme-makers for their wonderful storytelling, characters and memories.

The Battlefield at Fulford
The Bay Horse pub, Fulford (on the A19, just south of York)

On the morning of Wednesday, September 20, 1066, the northern Anglo-Saxon army left York to combat the Norwegian invaders. Join the walk to the battlefield at Fulford where this army tried, and failed, to block King Harald Hardrada. Chas Jones, author of 'The Forgotten Battle of 1066, Fulford', will describe the battle on a landscape that has altered little since Viking times. Wear walking clothes and stout footwear.

Combat through the Ages!

Drop in for the morning or the afternoon to see a display of weapons from the movies with Magnus the Armourer, as well as live presentations of combat through the ages by the warriors of the Royal Armouries, including an appearance by fully armoured medieval knights! 12.30pm: One-to-one combat: Women at War. With the JORVIK Vikings.

Afternoon session

1.30pm: Sword and shield. Royal Armouries interpreters in plate armour clash with sword and shield as the Prince of Wales and Henry Hotspur meet on the battlefield of Shrewsbury, in Shakespeare's 'Henry IV part I'.

2.00pm: The Art of the Armourer. With Magnus the Armourer.

2.30pm: Have-a-go sword combat. For children aged 7+.

3.00pm: One-to-one combat. With the JORVIK Vikings.

3.30pm: Elizabethan Swordmaster. Sword and buckler, rapier and dagger techniques - taken from the sixteenth-century manuals and demonstrated using scenes from Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'.

4.00pm: One-to-one combat: Women at War. With the JORVIK Vikings.

Romanesque Treasures of York Walk

The Trials of the Vikings

As Vikings invade from around the world, join the roughest and toughest as the Festival launches the competition to find the Viking Strong Man 2007 at our trial of strength. Look out for one-to-one combat and lifting the maiden, and cheer on your favourite. Staff from Next Generation will be getting the Vikings in peak form with advice on training and diet. Throughout the day would-be Vikings can be transformed into Berserkers, with expert make-up and costumes. Get a photographic record of your battle scars! Small charge for Viking make-up.

Come and find out how archaeologists discovered Viking Age excrement in excavations in York. This informal talk will also show how ancient filth can provide a host of insights into the most intimate details of everyday life 1000 years ago. Look out for leg-wrestling and lifting the weights. Get a taste of Viking lands with some of our international visitors. The Danish Seamen's Church of Hull will be on hand to discuss their work and to display a range of Scandinavian wares. The York Anglo-Scandinavian Society (www.angloscan.org.uk) will be selling a selection of their hand-made cards, and will have a display of traditional crafts for you to join in and enjoy! There will also be information about how you can join the Society and support their valuable work.

Fingerprints of Time - discover the age of everything!

A brand new interactive exhibition investigating the age of everything. From the 4.5 billion year old Middlesbrough Meteorite to today's newspaper, Fingerprints of Time will give visitors the chance to crack the dating code and find out how we know when the Vikings were in York. Viking Journeys: Community banners and stories
Local community groups will be working with poet Adrian Spendlow to compose their own stories of contemporary journeys inspired by the sagas of our Viking ancestors. Led by a visual artist, the groups will paint banners to illustrate the stories, and, as in previous Viking Festivals, these will decorate the big marquee in St Sampson's Square during the festival.
There will be public workshops on Feb 16th to create more stories and banners.
An Arts Action York Community Project.
