The walls that surround York are some of the finest and most complete city walls in England. They extend for 2.5 miles and enclose an area of 263 acres. The walls still retain all four of their impressive gateways into the city, called bars, as well as 34 of their 39 interval towers.
Whether you explore the walls as an individual, family, school party or group, the story you will discover will bring to life the compelling and rich history of the City of York. |
In 2007, a series of sixteen large interpretive panels, part funded by Yorkshire Forward, were installed at all on-off points around the City Walls. The panels have been installed at street-level in order not to intrude on the monument at wall-walk level and to make the story of the walls available to those who cannot physically access the wall-walk. This website is designed to complement the information presented to the visitor on these panels. |
